✰Print out their IEPs & understand who they are as a person/learner. This is extremely important. We can't support our students if we don't know who they are. Talk to them, their parents and really get to know them.
✰Identify the accommodations/modifications that each student needs and share it with other teachers who service that student. A great way to do this is by reading their IEPs and creating IEPs at a glance for yourself and other staff. If you are virtual, get creative with accommodations and modifications. Don't be afraid to try something new!
✰Focus on social emotional learning. Nobody was ready for a pandemic. Nobody was ready for remote learning. Schools were safe places for some kiddos. We really need to check-in with them every single day and make sure we focus on their mental health. Put the relationship before academic rigor
✰Communicate Frequently with Parents and Families. Ask for their feedback and make sure they know they can always contact you (even if it's only during school hours).
✰Brain Breaks ALWAYS help. Staring at a computer for such a long time and sitting in the same spot it not good for our students or us! Integrating brain breaks in our teaching can actually increase engagement and focus. 1-5 minutes is all you need.
There you have it- 5 tips that have been extremely helpful for my students to adjust to virtual learning. Share your own ideas in the comments. Happy teaching 💛
